WHAT IS SAFE FOOD & FARMING ?
Safe Food to begin with, will primarily need fundamental changes to take place in the way food is produced. This then has to be followed up with ensuring that the post-production processing also keeps our food safe (processing, ripening, coloring, flavoring, packaging etc.). But without ensuring the former, measures on the latter front will be meaningless. INDIA FOR SAFE FOOD believes that it is inadequate to just set standards at the retail end, without cleaning up our production processes, since by doing the latter, both farmers and consumers would benefit and enforcement of any safe food prescriptions will happen easily and better. Cleaning up of food production systems would mean removal of agri-chemicals and other agents like antibiotics from farming by our farming. You may ask, “is that possible?” and the GOOD NEWS IS, YES, IT IS VERY MUCH POSSIBLE! Tens of thousands of farmers are indeed producing food without the use of harmful toxins and other substances. In fact, in Andhra Pradesh, a special government programme called Community Managed Sustainable Agriculture (CMSA) with lakhs of farmers is ensuring that farmers give up the use of chemical pesticides by an approach called NPM (Non Pesticidal Management of crops). CAN YOU FARM WITHOUT PESTICIDES ?
The NPM experiences & evidence
Yes, you can, as the Andhra Pradesh experience of NPM shows very, very convincingly. In fact, pesticides have ended up bringing in more pests as many analyses show. The balance in our farms, where certain ‘beneficial insects and organisms’ were keeping the pests under control, got upset by chemical pesticides. Newer and more pests, in addition to resistance building up in pests have resulted from pesticides. NPM or organic farming looks at the science of pest management differently, understanding that Nature has in-built pest-predator relationships that need to be restored, that each pest has particular life stages and behaviour patterns that can be used to control its growth and proliferation, that diversity-based cropping is important to create ‘push-pull’ factors for pests, that there is a relationship between soil and plant health and pest incidence, between fertilizer use and pest incidence, between monocropping and pest incidence and so on and so forth. This new science of pest management does not seek to kill pests to control them but seeks to manage them using a variety of processes and products of Nature. NPM shows that No Pesticides would mean No Pests, when accompanied by an understanding of crop ecosystems and soil eco-systems and therefore, by the adoption of some simple, inexpensive and safe practices. http://takingroots.in/ipm_npm will give you more information on all the practices available for successful NPM of crops, across crops for different pests. The next obvious question that one would have is: would not this decrease yields and production? Would not this mean losses to farmers then? NO! NPM reduces cost of cultivation for farmers, thereby improving their net profit margins. Further, an evaluation study (Evaluation Report (October 2010), Third Party Evaluation of Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY/National Agriculture Development Program) - Community Managed Organic Farming implemented by SERP: Dr R Ratnakar and Dr M Surya Mani, Extension Education Institute, Ministry of Agriculture, Govt of India) done by agriculture scientists of this Andhra Pradesh NPM experience shows that yields have actually improved in several crops or stayed the same in others. Farmers in the locations where NPM has been adopted are reporting lesser borrowings for farming costs due to reduced need for buying and using external inputs and greater net incomes. A quiet and large revolution in Andhra Pradesh, led by women farmers is showing the path forward in this country. It is time that the path of these wise and well-informed women is followed by others. Apart from NPM, there are many other agro-ecological approaches like organic farming, natural farming, bio-dynamic farming and so on, practiced by lakhs of farmers in this country (with very little support from the government or others, essentially swimming against the tide) and if we all step forward to support such farming, our food can be made safer.
TIPS FOR SAFE FOOD
The All India Network Project on Pesticide Residues (a Government of India scheme to monitor residues through 21 laboratories around the country show that Cauliflower, Cabbage, Okra/Bhindi, Brinjal, Tomato, Bittergourd etc., amongst vegetables have shown up pesticide residues above MRLs in testing of samples in different states. Apple, Orange, Pear and Banana are also part of this list in addition to some foods like rice, wheat, milk, meat etc..
Very often, experts will tell you to wash your veggies and fruits carefully and thoroughly before cooking them/consuming them to get rid of pesticide residues. Some would say, soak them in salt water before consuming.
It is obvious that washing and cleaning will go to some extent in reducing residues in your food. However, don’t think this is a full solution. Because many systemic pesticides are not just on the surface of the fruits and veggies but all over, inside.
This is the same reason why we at India For Safe Food don’t believe that peeling off the skin of the fruits that you eat will keep you safe. However, we do admit that a small degree of improvement might happen with measures such as this.
However, the real and lasting solutions lie elsewhere.
1. For instance, procuring and consuming organic produce. Please don’t begin by saying that organic is exorbitantly priced. Not always – not everywhere. Even if it is slightly over-priced, compared to chemical-laden produce, remember that you might be saving on healthcare costs on the long run. Very often, middle class consumers do not hesitate to shell out that extra money for branded products which does not in reality add anything tangible in terms of benefits. If we do not hesitate to spend extra on branded products elsewhere, why hesitate to pay a little more on safe food?
Organic food is also priced higher today because there is no level playing field between organic and chemical. Rather than ask the chemical produce to be labeled for all its toxins, curiously enough, we have a system where organic farmers are penalized to prove themselves as organic wherein they incur additional costs for certification etc. One of the things that we should do is to put pressure on the government to ensure access to affordable, safe food. SEND A PETITION TO UNION AGRICULTURE MINISTER NOW.
2. Another thing that you can easily do to access Safe Food is to shift to coarse millets like Little Millet, Kodo Millet, Foxtail Millet, Proso Millet, Barnyard Millet etc., since these millets are grown in organic conditions by farmers. These are hardy traditional crops that do not require any chemical inputs for their cultivation and are therefore, “default organic”. What’s more, these grains are also much more nutritious than rice or wheat. 3. Also, even within organic, procure local and seasonal foods, not just for safety reasons but also for leaving a smaller eco-foot print behind your food consumption patterns.
4. Even if you are living in a city, you can easily ensure safe food for yourself partially, by growing your own vegetables in your balcony/terrace/courtyard etc. Take up such kitchen gardening and grow some of your favourite vegetables without the use of any chemicals. Several organizations and individuals are coming forward in different cities these days, to support those citizens who want to take up urban gardening by providing them with seeds, training, other resource materials etc. (watch out for a list of such resource agencies/persons from different states of India to be uploaded here soon; kindly also let us know if you are aware of any such groups/individuals with their full contacts, to be added to the compilation we are doing).
5. Encourage Schools and Colleges in your vicinity or to which your children are sent, to take up organic gardening/farming along with the children and the same to be included in the school kitchen/cooking. This will ensure safer food for our children.
6. If you can actually make the effort of going one step further, you and your friends, as a group, can tie up with a group of farmers closest to you to support those farmers to shift to organic cultivation. Here, you will not only get to know your farmer and his/her farm, you might be able to encourage the cultivation of crops/vegetables that you prefer. In the process, the farmers also benefit with assured markets from you and your friends in addition to any other input that you can support with including voluntary time spent on the farm, creating a win-win situation.
7. Once you change your own purchase and consumption behaviour related to food (including getting into food production wherever you can), start spreading the word.What has that got to do with Safe Food, you might ask. Well, when the demand for Safe Food grows, markets will push the demand back to the production end, where farmers will also realize that there are better markets for organic produce and start cultivating without toxins. This will imply large scale changes, which will make safe food more accessible to you too ultimately!

We believe that the best models are where - farmers and consumers can get onto a common platform and know each other, so that external certification for ‘trust’ and quality may be dispensed with; farmers get to determine their own price and the largest possible chunk of the retail price goes to the farmer directly; consumers have true choices for empowered, informed choices; where food miles and seasonality of foods are important parameters respected in the market transactions and so on. While the list is mainly of organic outlets, in more and more supermarkets, there are separate organic shelves being set up in the recent past. Please do ask your super-market if you shop there where the organic products have been put up in that particular outlet. WE have also not listed those organic brands which are available as part of chain stores like FabIndia. Most outlets of such brands do have their organic food shelves.
