India for Safe Food seeks promotion of organic farming
India for Safe Food’ which is going to launch its Odisha leg in Bhubaneswar on Sunday, has demand that the Government ensure people’s access to safe food by taking up measures like promoting and encouraging organic or ecological or natural farming with appropriate investments in research, extension and farmers’ collectives, providing incentives to farmers in terms of shift to such farming, and putting in place support systems to clean up the food production system of its toxic chemicals and keeping out the use of Genetically Modified Organisms in agriculture.
Asserting that the citizens have a right to Safe Food and it is the duty of the Government to ensure that they have access to safe food, the organisation has also demanded ensuring of access to organic food by opening outlets across Odisha and India, at least one outlet for every 50,000 Indians to begin with, that have a constant and affordable supply of a variety of organic food products, meaning food products without toxic chemicals or GMOs. The Government can use the existing Public Distribution System for the purpose, it said.
The demands also included providing poison-free food for pregnant women, lactating women, newborns and all children being covered under various food schemes of the Government and immediate banning of those pesticides which have been banned in other countries and are known to be teratogenic (able to disturb the growth and development of an embryo or fetus), mutagenic, carcinogenic, endocrine-disrupting, ‘extremely hazardous’ and with developmental toxicity, as another steps in ensuring access to safe food.
